## Resource

New York City is facing a worrying surge in West Nile Virus cases this year, with 23 confirmed infections already—surpassing last year’s total and spreading across all five boroughs. While most cases are mild or asymptomatic, the rise in severe neuroinvasive forms suggests many milder cases may be going unreported, with up to 149 silent infections for every one severe case. Record mosquito pools testing positive, fueled by climate change’s warmer temperatures and longer seasons, are creating ideal conditions for virus spread. Older adults, those with chronic illnesses, and immunocompromised individuals face the highest risk. Protect yourself by using EPA-approved repellent during dawn and dusk, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water around your home.
