## Resource

Two NYC councilmembers are demanding a major overhaul of specialized high school admissions, arguing the SHSAT unfairly excludes Black and Latino students—only 3% and 21% of seats at Stuyvesant went to them last year, while Asians took 56% despite being a smaller share of the student population. They’re pushing to eliminate the test as the sole gatekeeper for five elite schools, replacing it with a holistic admissions process including grades, essays, and recommendations—and even want to scrap the state law requiring the SHSAT. Their plan also includes expanding advanced math access and boosting prep programs in underserved communities, even as critics defend the test as a fair measure of ability.
