## Resource

Rikers Island’s reform momentum hit a major roadblock as federal oversight revealed alarming signs of secrecy and obstruction from the Department of Correction. Once hailed for progress, the jail system now faces backlash after officials blocked transparency, demanded internal vetting of all communications with monitors, and ignored court-mandated consultation protocols — even as recent deaths underscored the stakes. The judge stepped in with a firm order, demanding immediate compliance and unfiltered access to staff. While directives have been rescinded and the commissioner vows to fix missteps, experts warn this could be a critical test of whether real reform is possible — or if it’s already unraveling under bureaucratic resistance.
