## Resource

Attorney General Letitia James is halting the foreclosure of a Queens parking lot that sits atop a centuries-old African burial ground, demanding any buyer be fully informed and legally obligated to protect the remains. The site, once sacred land purchased by church leaders after slavery ended, was later buried under a factory and then a junkyard—until construction in 2011 unearthed hundreds of bodies. Now, with the property defaulting on its mortgage, local leaders including Borough President Donovan Richards Jr., St. Mark’s AME Church, and Councilmember Shekar Krishnan are pushing for it to become a memorial, while Mayor Zohran Mamdani eyes landmark status without committing to purchase. This isn’t just about real estate—it’s about justice, memory, and ensuring those who rest there are never forgotten.
