## Resource

Nebraska’s shaky opener against Ohio—despite being 23.5-point favorites—raised alarms about Big Ten readiness, while spotlighting a deeper crisis: coach buyouts. With Matt Rhule’s $63M exit fee (even after one year, still $54M), Nebraska is trapped by a contract extended through 2032 despite a 7-6 record and no winning seasons in the Big Ten. This isn’t isolated—Oklahoma’s Brent Venables signed a $60M+ deal with a 2029 expiration, yet his postseason track record and rival matchups leave questions. Massive buyouts, often born from fear of losing coaches, force schools to overextend financially and prolong underperformance. The only real fix? Wait for those numbers to shrink.
