## Resource

In 1974, Gryphon exploded onto the progressive rock scene with two wildly imaginative albums and a grueling North American tour opening for Yes—blending medieval sounds with modern rock in a way that still feels fresh today. Born from school friendships and deep roots in early music, the band’s quirky charm—from drummer Dave Oberlé’s “baptism of fire” to lyrics scribbled on cigarette packs—caught the attention of Transatlantic Records and even earned them BBC radio play across all four stations in one week. Their spontaneous studio sessions and surreal album art, like the frostbitten Midnight Mushrumps cover shot in Windsor Great Park, cemented their cult status. Though punk’s rise eventually sidelined their intricate sound, Gryphon’s legacy lives on—with reunions and enduring fans celebrating their fearless, medieval-meets-rock magic.
