On the final summer edition of Morning Cuppa Hockey , Jonny Lazarus and Colby Cohen break down a huge day of NHL news, beginning with the changing contract landscape after Ryan Leonard and Drake Batherson land massive eight-year extensions . They discuss what Leonard’s deal could mean for young stars like Will Smith and Gabe Perreault, the rising NHL salary cap and how teams are approaching long-term contracts differently than ever before. The guys also dive into John Hynes’ extension in Minnesota and the future of Quinn Hughes , debating whether the Wild could actually risk letting Hughes reach unrestricted free agency. Then, Sean Avery joins the show following the announcement of The Sean Avery Show , launching September 23rd on the HockeyFights YouTube channel. Avery shares what fans can expect from the new show before getting into the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, John Tavares’ tax situation, Quinn Hughes, offer sheets, NHL scouting and team-building. Things get heated as Avery and the guys debate the value of draft picks and young players before turning their attention to the Detroit Red Wings, Dylan Larkin and the organization’s uncertain direction . Plus, Avery and Jonny go head-to-head over expectations for Rangers players before Colby closes the final summer show with a heartfelt remembrance of Barry Melrose and the impact he had on hockey, broadcasting and everyone who knew him.
