## Resource

The WNBA is soaring with record-breaking deals, but the spotlight has turned fiery as a trans athlete controversy ignites national debate. Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham sparked outrage by saying trans girls shouldn’t compete in women’s sports to protect young athletes — a stance echoing recent Supreme Court rulings that empower states to ban trans athletes from school sports. Rallies, political pressure, and apologies from the Seattle Storm highlight the deep divisions. But it’s not just about policy — players face online abuse, death threats, and racial slurs, as the league struggles to shield them. With sports increasingly tied to culture wars, the WNBA is caught in the crosshairs, forced to balance growth, inclusion, and safety amid rising toxicity.
