## Resource

In southwest France, wildfires have left entire communities in ruins—Le Porge, in particular, is still uninhabitable after losing 183 homes. Over 220,000 people were evacuated, with 84,000 now returning, but many feel abandoned, forced to defend their homes with garden hoses and no official help. Residents describe terrifying scenes of sparks raining down and forests igniting instantly, while firefighters battled extreme heat and inadequate resources. Warning systems failed—some only heard alarms from neighbors’ horns. Though smaller than North American blazes, these fires are unprecedented in Europe. Now, as recovery begins, residents are considering legal action over redirected fire crews and demand accountability. Officials acknowledge the devastation and hope for solidarity like during the pandemic, but long-term health risks from smoke linger. With climate disasters growing more frequent and water bombers grounded for maintenance, Le Porge’s fight for rebuilding—and justice—is just beginning.
