## Resource

Minnesota’s lakes are hiding a vital secret: the underwater plants we call weeds are actually nature’s unsung heroes, stabilizing shorelines, filtering water, and feeding fish. But thanks to outdated laws letting property owners remove them for access—and a stubborn “ick” factor—these ecosystems are collapsing. Native species vanish, invasive milfoil takes over, and critical habitats like wild rice beds disappear. Scientists and conservationists are rallying to flip the script, urging Minnesotans to see these plants not as nuisances but as the backbone of healthy lakes. With manual removal gaining traction over toxic chemicals, the hope is that education can turn public perception around before it’s too late.
