This New Movie Monday, we are reviewing the A24 sensation Backrooms, based on the totemic YouTube series of the same name. Of course, we can't cover Backrooms without a lengthy discussion about this cultural moment in horror cinema, off the heels of Curry Barker's breakout hit Obsession. Griffey, Heath and Sam think they have a good handle on what it all means and make the argument that the film should've been even MORE abstract. We do our best to not get lost in the maze of this counfounding film while praising the performance of Chiwetel Ejiofor, the novel vision of director Kane Parsons and, of course, the most messed up moment in the movie. Synopsis: After a therapist's patient disappears into a dimension beyond reality, she must venture into the unknown to save him. Director: Kane Parsons Starring: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve and Mark Duplass ## Actions - request_transcript: `POST https://stenobird.com/v1/public/podcasts/messed-up-movies-543962/episodes/backrooms/transcription-requests` — Idempotently request low-priority transcript generation for this episode. - read_markdown: `GET https://stenobird.com/podcast/messed-up-movies-543962/backrooms.md` — Read the agent-friendly Markdown representation of this episode resource.
