## Resource

US apples are poised to enter Australia’s market, sparking alarm among Aussie growers who fear a flood of cheap imports could devastate their industry. With the US second only to China in apple production and facing a massive surplus, the move threatens local food security — especially since Australia’s free-trade status leaves it with little room to negotiate economic safeguards. Biosecurity remains the top concern, as diseases like fire blight and apple maggots could wreak havoc on Australian orchards, echoing the recent varroa mite crisis. While officials acknowledge the risks and promise protective measures, final import rules remain pending — leaving farmers bracing for impact.
