## Resource

Australia’s tobacco tax debate is heating up as the Coalition proposes slashing excise by 80% to undercut organized crime and deter youth access — but health experts warn it could reverse smoking decline by making cigarettes cheaper. They argue high prices are a key quitting tool, and instead urge stronger enforcement, better supply chain tracking, free nicotine replacement therapies, and robust public health campaigns to tackle illicit trade without compromising public health gains.
