## Resource

Gonorrhoea and syphilis cases across Australia are surging — up over 50% in a decade — with alarming spikes among women and devastating disparities for Indigenous communities. Over 42,000 gonorrhoea and nearly 6,000 syphilis infections were reported last year, and syphilis rates among women have skyrocketed by 167%. The stakes are high: untreated syphilis can cause miscarriage and lifelong harm to newborns. Indigenous Australians face staggering inequities — diagnosed at 4x and 6x the rate of non-Indigenous people — underscoring urgent needs for culturally safe, accessible services in regional areas. Health experts urge everyone to resume regular STI testing, as one infection increases the risk of another. Tackling this crisis demands more than treatment — it requires systemic change, including better access, ongoing care, and addressing the social roots of these preventable outbreaks.
