## Resource

Victorian Labor is poised to expand police search powers if elected, introducing “Jack’s Law” — a controversial measure allowing handheld metal detectors in public to combat knife crime, named after teen victim Jack Beasley. While the policy mirrors opposition plans and includes funding for 1,200 new wands, experts warn it lacks proven effectiveness and risks racial profiling, citing failed trials and minimal evidence of crime reduction. The debate intensifies as current restrictions are legally shaky and rarely yield weapons, sparking urgent questions about whether this approach truly enhances safety or merely distracts from deeper societal issues.
