## Resource

Stockport’s council has unveiled a draft housing plan aiming for over 24,000 new homes by 2042 — falling short of the government’s 32,000 target — sparking tension as officials warn it’s a “bitter pill to swallow.” With public feedback reshaping the proposal and pressure mounting from Westminster over missed targets, the council is balancing ambitious regeneration with protecting green spaces. Facing potential takeover by the government if targets aren’t met, leaders are calling for infrastructure funding and urging caution against damaging Stockport’s character — even as they’ve already approved thousands of homes under current constraints.
