## Resource

After shuttering amid accusations of institutional racism and lack of diversity, Manchester’s Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art has been reborn as esea contemporary — a bold new space led by Shanghai-born artist Xiaowen Zhu. Designed to amplify the voices of the east and south-east Asian diaspora, the gallery now employs a team of first- and second-generation migrants, prioritizing community accountability and global representation. Emerging from a fraught past entangled with geopolitical restrictions, esea contemporary celebrates its 40th anniversary with a year-long program featuring groundbreaking exhibitions, online retrospectives, and a film by Umi Ishihara. Zhu’s vision is clear: to dismantle underrepresentation in UK art institutions and empower artists to create without apology or justification.
