## Resource

A historic battle is brewing in Madison: developers want to demolish the century-old Wonder Bar to build 190 new apartments, while preservationists push to declare it a city landmark — one of the last surviving Prohibition-era roadhouses. With rumors of secret tunnels and mob ties, the building’s legacy is steeped in mystery. Supporters say preserving it connects future generations to real history, not just textbooks — and past projects prove housing and heritage can coexist. But critics argue its lack of documented significance and current disrepair make it unfit for landmark status. The City’s Landmarks Commission will soon decide — and this showdown could shape how Madison balances progress with preservation.
