## Resource

A federal watchdog report exposes shocking conditions at Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz” detention center, where nearly 80 immigrants were confined in cramped, four-by-four-foot metal cages for up to two hours — a practice deemed non-standard and violating humane treatment guidelines. Though officially temporary and now shuttered, the facility operated under unclear standards while state officials managed daily operations. Detainees faced inadequate medical care, infrequent showers riddled with bugs, and no access to clean drinking water. Inspectors found some protocols followed, but critical ones on hygiene and nutrition were ignored. Staff labeled the cells “calming areas,” even though one instance may have been used for punishment. Despite the facility’s closure, the report raises urgent questions about how detainees were treated during their time there.
