## Resource

A two-year-old blue heeler mix named Ripley is being trained to avoid rattlesnakes using a harmless, venom-gland-removed snake named Brian and a training collar that delivers a quick zap—designed to teach her to steer clear of real venomous snakes. With over 150,000 U.S. dogs bitten by snakes annually and Tucson vets seeing 4-6 cases daily, this kind of prevention is gaining traction, especially for prey-driven dogs. While electronic collars are popular for their speed and effectiveness, experts caution on proper use and weigh risks. Beyond training, simple yard safety and vigilance on trails can help—and if bitten, immediate vet care is critical to saving your pup’s life.
