## Resource

Lubbock’s police are rolling out automated license plate readers from Flock, with 12 fixed cameras (two down), 6 mobile units, and 6 more pending state approval. Though the tech dates back to the 70s, these cameras snap still images, not video, and will soon cut data retention from 30 to 7 days. Chief Herman emphasized the system’s purpose: catching criminals, not tracking everyday life. Officers must have a criminal link to search the database, which has been queried 37,000 times this year—mostly for repeat cases involving stolen cars, wanted persons, and theft. Strict protocols govern use, with no improper searches reported yet; violations would trigger internal reviews and criminal probes. The system flags anomalies, audited every six months (likely more often). Council questioned if it flags uninsured or unlicensed drivers—answer: no. Flock stores data but can’t access it. Legal precedent holds that if an officer can monitor an intersection, so can a camera. Mayor confident the Constitution protects against unreasonable searches, not all searches. Some council members remain cautious but grateful for the tools, with one mom saying she’d want every resource used to protect her kids. Chief insists these cameras are vital—without them, they’d need far more officers on the streets. Listen in comfort: Get a discount on a Soli Pillow: http://solipillow.com/discount/dnn.
