## Resource

Lubbock just approved a bold new deal for firefighters: a 24-on, 72-off schedule that gives them an extra day off — a major shift aimed at boosting mental health and long-term well-being. Backed by research and pushed by the firefighters’ union, this plan comes with a $14.8 million investment over six years to hire 133 new firefighters, offer five years of raises, and add mental health leave and fitness perks. Only Plano, Texas, has done something similar — and city leaders hope healthier, rested first responders will deliver better service for all Lubbock residents.
