## Resource

In 1926, Lillian Milam took in a nine-month-old orphan in Lubbock—and that single act sparked a lifelong mission. With her husband W.T., she founded the Milam Opportunity Home, a sanctuary for neglected children while permanent families were found. Her compassion galvanized the entire community: schools, civic groups, and even the Junior League rallied to donate everything from bikes to holiday gifts. Lillian’s influence extended far beyond shelter—she shaped Lubbock’s social fabric through art clubs, PTA, and more, always putting kids first. As demand grew, local builders and donors helped expand the home. One poignant legacy: Leslie C. Smith, a boy who stayed there, died in WWII but funded a dormitory in his honor—its cornerstone still stands. Even after retiring in 1956, her impact endured. The home evolved into Buckner Orphans, then other community services. Though some buildings vanished to progress—including Interstate 27—the cornerstones remained. In 1987, Lubbock MHMR erected a memorial wall to honor Lillian’s unwavering devotion to Lubbock’s most vulnerable children.
