## Resource

The NFL’s season kicked off on a Wednesday this year—not by choice, but because of a quirky federal law that bans Friday broadcasts in Australia, where the Rams vs. 49ers opener was scheduled. With their Netflix deal locking in a Week One game through 2029, the league is experimenting with weekday openers, starting selectively with Wednesdays for special matchups. Commentators Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth weigh in: Tirico sees it as a numbers-driven gamble fans will adapt to, even joking about camel commercials helping viewers remember; Collinsworth believes this flexibility will grow as the NFL expands internationally. The goal? More standalone games = more eyeballs = higher broadcast payouts. While no regular Wednesday night package is planned, expect the league to pick spots strategically as media landscapes evolve.
