## Resource

California’s later school start times are paying off: students are sleeping more, mental health is improving, and test scores in math and English are rising. Since Senate Bill 328 took effect two years ago, middle schools now begin no earlier than 8 AM and high schools at 8:30 AM, boosting sleep by 13%—a key win for student well-being. While some parents face commute and schedule headaches, and teens still sometimes stay up late, the data shows real gains in morning rest and academic performance. Officials see this as a vital step against sleep deprivation, though they acknowledge it’s just one part of the solution—including managing screen time. Implementation challenges highlight the need for better support and communication across districts, but overall, the evidence strongly supports later starts as a smart, effective policy for student success.
