## Resource

California lawmakers are pushing again for data center water transparency with a nearly identical bill to last year’s vetoed proposal, now cleared by the state senate. The new law mandates detailed reporting of water sources and usage under penalty of perjury for permit applications — a move driven by public backlash and growing environmental concerns as AI infrastructure strains resources. While environmental groups and communities support the push for accountability, tech and business interests resist, arguing unfair targeting. With nationwide opposition mounting and local governments considering bans, this bill could be a pivotal step toward balancing digital growth with sustainable water use — though experts warn it’s just the beginning without broader guidance and support for smaller jurisdictions.
