## Resource

Two new bills now sit on Governor Newsom’s desk demanding data centers in California disclose and pay for their water use—putting tech giants on the spot as public pressure mounts over their environmental toll. After last year’s vetoed attempt, lawmakers are pushing back harder, especially as AI boom fuels scrutiny. One bill blocks new or expanded centers without full water plans and upfront costs; another mandates detailed reporting under penalty of perjury. With cities banning or halting projects and national polls showing majority opposition, the governor faces mounting pressure to sign these accountability measures—while industry groups debate whether they’re fair or targeted.
