## Resource

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom has moved swiftly to safeguard against AI risks by signing an executive order mandating emergency “kill switches” for advanced AI systems, launching a statewide push for independent oversight, mandatory safety audits, and clearer accountability for developers. Triggered by real-world security breaches, the move accelerates existing AI safety laws and sets a two-month deadline for national experts to deliver concrete recommendations—including expanded incident definitions and third-party verification protocols. With stakes too high to wait, Newsom is signaling California’s leadership in balancing innovation with urgent, proactive safety controls for frontier AI.
