## Resource

Joy Fraser’s debut novel, “The Susu Keeper,” unveils the beating heart of Caribbean migrant life in London’s Kentish Town, centered on a communal washhouse that doubled as a sanctuary for connection, resilience, and solidarity. Drawing from her own upbringing, Fraser paints a vivid portrait of a time when community was everything—where women gathered to share burdens, resolve disputes (even ones involving police!), and build trust through the powerful West African/Caribbean tradition of “susu,” an informal savings system that empowered migrants excluded from banks. The story honors real-life figures like “Aunt Faith,” the revered susu keeper who became a pillar of support, mirroring Fraser’s own journey from Grenada to London and her search for belonging. With early acclaim—including a Discoveries Prize nomination—and talks with publishers underway, this moving tribute to cultural survival and neighborhood transformation is poised to resonate far beyond its roots.
