## Resource

The UK government is taking over Speciality Steel UK to save 1,300 jobs across South Yorkshire and the West Midlands, after failed talks with a Norwegian green steel startup. The plant, once part of Sanjeev Gupta’s empire, has been idle for a year since going into administration — its collapse linked to the Greensill Capital crash. Despite monthly wage subsidies costing £3.5 million, officials deemed private bids insufficient for long-term stability. Local leaders applaud the move as a lifeline for struggling steel communities, while some politicians are caught off guard by the sudden pivot to public ownership.
