## Resource

British Steel’s survival is costing taxpayers a fortune—$1.3 million a day, with a potential $1.5 billion tab by 2028—and the government still can’t explain how it’ll turn a profit. Taken into public ownership last year to save jobs and steel production, the company now faces intense scrutiny over its lack of a clear business model, decarbonization plan, and economic role. Complicating matters further, the former owner seeks nearly $1 billion in compensation, while China has voiced concerns, all as ministers scramble to justify ballooning spending without sacrificing support for other UK steelmakers.
