## Resource

Berkeley Homes tried to slash affordable housing in their Elephant and Castle project from 230 to just 60 units, citing rising costs and new rules—but Southwark Council rejected the plan, calling it insufficiently beneficial to the public. Residents and artists voiced concerns over lost community spaces and blocked sunlight, while Berkeley defended its move by blaming economic downturns and grant shortfalls. Yet council members noted the company’s $550 million profit last year, making the cutbacks seem even more unjust. The committee unanimously denied the application, upholding the original plan’s 35% affordable housing target and rejecting any development that fails to serve local needs or protect heritage and daylight.
