He would casually make hostile bids to take over Fortune 100 and even Fortune 10 companies throughout the 80s and 90. Once he got his hands on these companies, he would gut them by eliminating everything that didn’t make a profit and selling off the remaining assets. This practice would absolutely destroy the company and the people who worked there, but for Icahn and his investors, this was quite lucrative and profitable. But, ever since the turn of the century, corporate raiding hasn’t been nearly as popular. In fact, corporate raiding has completely disappeared into oblivion aside from a few exceptions like Twitter. Icahn himself has taken a step back from raiding. In late 2012, for example, he purchased a 10% stake in Netflix but he never raised this to a controlling stake like he usually would. There have also been accusations recently that Icahn may have been running a Ponzi scheme with his investors in recent history.
