## Resource

Leicestershire’s controversial plan to hire private security guards for town patrols has been scrapped — with $2 million redirected instead to strengthen the local police force. Facing strong opposition from the Police Federation and critics who called it a gimmick, the decision follows pressure from Liberal Democrat and Labour voices who argued outsourcing policing was ineffective. The new strategy, approved by the Police and Crime Panel, will deploy 16 Police Community Support Officers across key towns like Loughborough and Market Harborough before Christmas — aimed at boosting safety during the festive season and supporting local businesses. The original idea, inspired by a Melton Mowbray trial, was seen as a quick fix, but now officials admit the real solution lies in empowering frontline officers.
