In February nineteen eighty-two, twenty-nine-year-old sailor Steven Callahan was alone in the Atlantic when his twenty-one-foot sailboat, Napoleon Solo, was badly damaged during a rough night at sea. He escaped into a small inflatable life raft with limited food, little fresh water, solar stills, flares, charts, a spear gun, and emergency gear recovered from the sinking boat. Instead, they found Callahan alive inside a damaged raft, severely underweight but still able to respond.
