In October 1972, a chartered Uruguayan Air Force Fairchild carrying members of the Old Christians Club rugby team, relatives, friends, supporters, and crew set out from Montevideo for Santiago, Chile. Bad weather forced an overnight stop in Mendoza, Argentina. The next afternoon, the aircraft departed again, following a lower route through the Andes because it could not safely cross the highest terrain directly. It crashed in the Argentine Andes, just east of the Chilean border. Thirty-three people survived the initial impact, many of them injured, at an elevation of roughly eleven thousand five hundred to twelve thousand feet. With little food, freezing temperatures, and only the damaged fuselage for protection, the group waited as search aircraft failed to locate the wreckage. After eight days, the official search was suspended. This episode follows the ordeal through its major turning points: the crash, the search failure, the October 29 avalanche that killed eight more people, the group’s difficult adaptation, and the decisive December trek by Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa that led to Sergio Catalan, a Chilean man traveling on horseback, and to the helicopter rescue of the remaining survivors.
