In this episode, I'm joined by Matt from Post Postmodern Theology to take on one of the oldest—and increasingly popular—attacks on the New Testament: the claim that Paul created a different Christianity than Jesus, James, Peter and the original apostles. We examine the supposed contradictions between Paul and James on faith and works, Paul's teaching on meat sacrificed to idols, the Jerusalem Council, the early Church's acceptance of Paul's writings, and Peter's remarkable comments about Paul's letters. We also go deeper into the identity of Jesus, James calling Christ the “Lord of Glory,” Hebrews 1, the Shema, Jesus' declaration before the high priest, and what the earliest Christians actually believed about Christ. Was Paul preaching “Paulianity”—or was he faithfully carrying the Gospel entrusted to the apostles? This one gets deep. Subscribe to JT Follows JC for more conversations on Scripture, early Christianity, biblical history and the questions most churches won't touch. The episode specifically argues that early Christians and figures associated with the apostolic generation accepted and quoted Paul's writings rather than treating him as an enemy of the apostles.
