From ancient times, the chains themselves were venerated as precious relics, and according to tradition, when the chains from Peter's imprisonment in Jerusalem were placed alongside those from his later imprisonment in Rome, they miraculously fused into a single chain. The feast reminds the faithful that no earthly power can restrain the Church when God wills her freedom, and that Christ remains faithful to His promise that the gates of hell shall not prevail against the Rock upon whom He built His Church.
