Living in Bethany near Jerusalem, she welcomed Christ into her home and served Him with generous devotion, though He gently reminded her that contemplation of God, exemplified by her sister Mary, is "the better part" when she became overly anxious with many tasks. Martha's faith shone most brilliantly after the death of Lazarus, when she confidently professed her belief in Christ, declaring, "Yea, Lord, I have believed that Thou art Christ the Son of the living God," immediately before Jesus raised her brother from the dead. Tradition also holds that after the Resurrection and the persecution of the early Church, Martha, Mary, and Lazarus evangelized in Provence, where Martha became renowned for her charity and holiness.
