According to her legend, she was raised by a wealthy, pagan Roman magistrate named Urbain, who imprisoned her in a high tower filled with golden idols to keep her from practicing Christianity. Instead, Christina smashed the idols, sold the gold to feed the poor, and openly declared her faith. Enraged, her father and subsequent Roman authorities subjected her to horrific tortures—including throwing her into Lake Bolsena tied to a heavy millstone, from which angels miraculously saved her.
