The International Organization for Standardization is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations. The organization develops and publishes worldwide technical, industrial and commercial standards. ISO Standards are internationally agreed upon by experts, often thought of as a formula that describes the optimal way of doing something. These standards vary in type and cover a wide range of actrivities such as making a product, managing a process, delivering a service or supplying materials. Standards are the distilled wisdom of people with expertise in their subject matter and who know the needs of the organizations they represent. These experts could be manufacturers, sellers, buyers, customers, trade associations, users or regulators. Some examples of standards include: Quality management standards to help work more efficiently and reduce product failures. Environmental management standards to help reduce environmental impacts, reduce waste and be more sustainable. Health and safety standards to help reduce accidents in the workplace. Ergonomic standards to ensure workers move safely in certian job roles. Medical Device standards to ensure usability and correct use of medical devices IT security standards to help keep sensitive information secure. These examples, and many others, show the breadth and depth in which these standards connect with the Human Factors Field. This has been another Human Factors Minute!
