What happens when a church grows faster than its ability to know and shepherd the people God is adding? Church growth is a good thing. Acts repeatedly celebrates people coming to Christ and being added to the Church. But growth can expose weaknesses in how people are known, cared for, discipled, and protected. In Pot 3, Cup 5 of Grace in the Grind, Cody Hudson examines biblical shepherding through 1 Peter 5, Acts 20, Hebrews 13, and Acts 6. Scripture calls church leaders shepherds for a reason. A shepherd does more than count sheep. A church may know attendance, familiar faces, giving, and who serves where while still missing that someone’s marriage is collapsing, faith is weakening, grief is isolating them, or sin is taking root. You can count a flock without knowing a flock. This episode explores: • What biblical shepherding requires • Why knowing a name is not the same as knowing a condition • What it means for elders to shepherd the flock “among” them • Why pastors cannot know everything about everyone • The responsibility members have to be known • How growth challenges pastoral care • What Acts 6 teaches when people are overlooked • Why large churches are not automatically unhealthy • Why small churches are not automatically healthy This is not an argument for a biblical maximum church size. Scripture gives us no such number. It is also not an accusation against pastors faithfully serving growing congregations. The deeper question is: Whatever size our congregation becomes, can we still obey what Scripture says about caring for Christ’s people? Acts 6 gives us an important picture.
