Heather Haggarty is an attorney, mom, and now organizer. After Trump was elected in 2016, she realized that voting was not enough, and began to volunteer with grassroots organizations and campaigns. In October 2024, after watching traditional get-out-the-vote strategies fail with young voters, she and her Gen-Z daughter launched Donuts + Democracy . In this conversation, we discussed how Donuts + Democracy came to be, why it’s so important to reach and educate young voters, how low voter turnout in young people isn’t necessarily about apathy but frustration, and what advice Heather would give to women who have an idea but are unsure where to start.
