Der österreichische Präsidentschaftswahlkampf 1986 wurde durch die Waldheim-Affäre geprägt. Die Kontroverse um Kurt Waldheims NS-Vergangenheit löste eine intensive Debatte über Antisemitismus und Österreichs Umgang mit seiner NS-Geschichte aus. Es war ein Einschnitt für das Land. Im Widerstand gegen Geschichtsverdrängung entstand der Republikanische Club – Neues Österreich. 40 Jahre später zu hören: Die Filmemacherin Ruth Beckermann („Waldheims Walzer“), die Sprachwissenschaftlerin Ruth Wodak, der Schriftsteller Doron Rabinovici, der Historiker Andreas Kranebitter (DÖW) und Moderator Raimund Löw.
