Not what makes people successful. Not what makes them comfortable or admired or free from obvious pain. Something harder and more interesting. What makes a human life genuinely good? Not good in someone else’s estimation. Not good according to the prevailing standards of the culture. Genuinely, deeply, lastingly good—the kind of good that holds up under examination, that you would choose again at the end, that constitutes something worth having been.
