Göbekli Tepe should not exist. At least not according to the older version of human history most people were taught. Built around 9600 BC in southeastern Turkey, the site predates Stonehenge by roughly 6,000 years and the Great Pyramid by nearly 7,000. Massive T-shaped pillars. Complex symbolic carvings. Ritual architecture. Deliberate burial. All appearing at a point in history when humans were supposedly still too primitive to build anything like it. Then the surrounding region started producing even more sites. Karahan Tepe. Sayburç. Sefer Tepe. The wider Taş Tepeler network. Suddenly Göbekli Tepe no longer looked like an isolated anomaly. It looked like evidence of an entire forgotten cultural world emerging near the end of the Ice Age.
