Born on January 20, 1998, in Hyattsville, Maryland, he is the son of Sierra Leonean immigrants who fled civil war in their home country. His unique connection to tennis began when his father, a day laborer on the construction crew for the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) in College Park, was hired as the facility's custodian and given a spare office to live in. For over a decade, Tiafoe and his twin brother, Franklin, lived at the center five days a week, starting their tennis training at age four and practicing on courts their father helped build.Tiafoe’s junior career was marked by historic achievements, most notably becoming the youngest-ever boys' singles champion at the prestigious Orange Bowl in 2013 at the age of 15. He reached a career-high junior ranking of world No. 2 before turning professional in 2015. His transition to the ATP Tour saw him reach several milestones, including winning his first title at the 2018 Delray Beach Open, where he became the youngest American to win an ATP tournament since Andy Roddick in 2002. In June 2023, he broke into the world’s top 10 for the first time, becoming only the third African American man to achieve this feat.On the court, Tiafoe is known for an aggressive offensive game centered on a powerful serve that can exceed 140 mph and a highly unorthodox forehand.
