He knows that country better than almost anyone — the animals, the terrain, the sounds, the silhouettes. But on a October 2019 pack-out, with six riders, four mules, and three elk worth of meat heading for the trailhead, something stopped his entire string cold in the last two miles of trail. It was standing on the ridge above them. In the open. In full daylight. And it was not moving. What the guide, his wrangler, and four hunters witnessed that day in the Bob Marshall Wilderness was something none of them wanted to call by name — a massive, upright, hair-covered figure standing at the ridge crest approximately four hundred yards above the trail, estimated at between seven and a half and nine feet tall, watching their string of horses and mules with what every witness described as calm, unhurried attention. It showed no fear. It made no aggressive movement. It simply watched — and when it was ready, it turned and walked away on two legs, slow and deliberate, over the far side of the ridge and out of sight.
