Six days later, three hundred Pinkerton agents arrived on barges on the Monongahela River. Ten people died. The union was crushed for forty-six years. Carnegie was in Scotland when it happened, having left his chairman Henry Clay Frick with instructions that amounted to approval of anything he did. Carnegie's profits rose $106 million in the nine years that followed. The libraries and the castle came after.
