About A distinguished sociologist and musicologist, Dr. Charles is a leading authority on Black British music, identity, and cultural theory, with a prolific record of publications and academic contributions. Her interdisciplinary research bridges critical race theory, popular music studies, and cultural sociology, shaping discourse on youth culture, gender, and the Black Atlantic. Recognized for extensive public engagement and academic leadership, she drives impactful scholarship and cultural initiatives. Dr. Monique Charles is a cultural sociologist, theorist and methodologist. She completed her Ph.D. at Warwick University in Coventry, England, where she developed a method for analyzing music within the social sciences. Her research interests include popular culture, music/musicology, sound studies, embodiment, spirituality, cultural studies, class, gender and race with a particular interest in the African Diaspora (i.e. Black people in Europe and North America). She has published in sociology, cultural studies and qualitative methods journals and has several articles and a book in progress titled “Black British Grime Goes Global: Social Media, Subcultural Practice and Citizenship.” She will be teaching courses in research methods, subcultures and black music for Sociology and Ethnic Studies.
